Just Jennifer’s, located just a mile north of the Arkansas state line in the quiet village of Blue Eye, is much more than a craft store. It’s the home base of Jennifer Sharpe, a gifted artisan and entrepreneur whose passion for handmade beauty has brought color and creativity to this rural corner of Missouri.
I first met Jennifer when she traveled to Nixa to teach a locker hooking class for our local craft guild, the Ozark Mountain Rug Hookers. My husband Richard and I, both longtime members of the guild, were immediately taken by her warmth and the intricacy of her work. Locker hooking, a lesser-known cousin to rug hooking, uses strips of fabric and a special tool to create tightly woven pieces that are both functional and decorative. Jennifer brought with her a stunning collection – rugs, trivets, tote bags, and wall hangings – that showcased the versatility of this art form.
Jennifer’s journey to Missouri began far from the Ozarks. She spent much of her early life in Africa, where her father worked. When her family returned to England, she found the climate too cold and the lifestyle too cramped. Eventually, she relocated to the Solomon Islands, where she owned and operated a screen printing business. Her life took another turn when she met and married an American man from Arkansas. The move to the United States brought her to War Eagle, Arkansas, a community known for its historical mill and popular craft fairs.
It was in War Eagle that Jennifer began teaching craft classes and showcasing her handmade items at the renowned War Eagle Craft Fair. Her specialties expanded beyond locker hooking to include smocking, quilting, and fiber art fashion design. One of her most unique creations – quilted sweatshirt jackets – gained national attention when Butterick Patterns invited her to develop a commercial pattern. Her design was even featured on the cover of their catalog, giving her business a substantial boost and affirming her status as a true innovator in fiber arts.
But Jennifer is not just an artist – she’s a collaborator and a mentor. At Just Jennifer’s, she doesn’t only sell her own creations. She also features work by local women who craft small, thoughtful gifts – from fabric angels to seasonal decorations. Many of these items are sold not only in her shop but are wholesaled to boutiques across the region, including The Quilted Cow in Branson and even stores as far away as Houston, Texas.
When she felt the need for a new chapter, Jennifer moved north to Missouri and opened her shop in Blue Eye, population 289. Despite its small size, the town sits between two major tourist attractions – Table Rock Lake and Dogwood Canyon Nature Park – and not far from the popular Bass Pro Shops Long Creek Marina in Ridgedale. Her shop at 11864 State Highway 86 is perfectly placed for lake visitors, day-trippers, and fiber enthusiasts traveling through the area.
Her studio is open Wednesday through Saturday, and stepping inside feels like entering a vibrant, creative sanctuary. Bolts of colorful fabric line the shelves, and examples of finished pieces inspire both beginners and seasoned crafters. Jennifer continues to teach, not only in her shop but also during the busy tourist season at Silver Dollar City in Branson. Her classes often fill up with visitors eager to try their hand at a unique craft and go home with a handmade souvenir and a story to tell.
Jennifer has also become part of the local community, connecting with women from the nearby church and joining in small-town life. Her presence brings a sense of vibrancy to Blue Eye – an infusion of culture, creativity, and camaraderie that’s rare in such a rural setting.
