Paul Schot

In Town:   Paul is manager of the plumbing department of Miller Hardware in Yellville, Ark. He’s worked there for 5 years and says it’s a great place to work. He especially enjoys helping the customers and being able to work out problems they may have. Paul said that Yellville is an agricultural community and he believes that the best people are people who work the land.

In the Country:  Paul and his wife Theresa raise free-range poultry under all-natural conditions at Schots’ Slope Farm. Paul said, “We try to raise the healthiest and best bird we can, and we stay away from hormones and antibiotics.”

About the flock:  The Schots raise both chickens and turkeys for meat birds, as well as chickens for egg production. They do everything themselves – purchase their birds as chicks, feed and raise them, slaughter, process and market the birds off their farm. For 6 years they raised birds just for themselves and their friends and family. But the demand grew to such an extent that a couple of years ago, they decided that they would make a business out of it. So far they have been able to keep up with the demand by raising around 300 birds a year, but have plans to expand. Birds are sold whole and fresh-frozen, although the Schots will take orders for unfrozen birds on the day of slaughter.
