Production sale consignment tips
It is fall production sale season and whether you are having your own production sale or consigning animals to a special breed sale, you want your animals to look their best. No matter the species or breed you raise, there are several ‘best practices’ when it comes to getting the most for your livestock during sale season.
• Consign healthy, sound structured, functional animals. Healthy and functional livestock are the cornerstone of a successful sale. A great pedigree and EPDs will only get an animal so far if they can’t walk or are not in top condition.
• Have accurate data available on your animals. The more accurate and transparent the data is for a potential buyer, the higher the chances are for a successful sale. Birth weights, weaning weights and carcass scan information are just a few things that will help your buyer decide if your animal is right for them.
• Animals should be in excellent condition. Whether it is body condition or animal health. Things such as an underweight animal, ringworm, warts, etc. can have a negative effect on potential buyers. Having livestock clipped and presented to the best of their ability gives a great first impression.
• Be proactive and prepared to do some of the marketing of your animal(s). Pick your consignments early to allow for preparation and advertising. Reach out to former and current customers of your livestock and make sure they are aware of your upcoming sale. You should be advertising your livestock on a regular basis and building relationships with current and potential customers up until the sale.
• Identify your customers and market to them. Determine what will set your program apart and utilize the genetics in your herd you want to market. Knowing what buyers in the area are looking for will help you determine what animals will fit the bill.
• Pictures add value! Poor photos are worse than no photos! Professional photos encourage potential buyers to attend the sale. If you are taking your own photos, patience is key to getting the best shot. If the sale utilizes videos in its marketing, make sure you are taking advantage of this option.
• Sale books need to be out in a timely manner if you are having your own production sale. Set a deadline for photos and information and stick to it. Take into consideration postal rates and bulk mailing guidelines early on when working on deadlines.
Being proactive when marketing your livestock consignments will help you get the most for your animal when sale day arrives.
