What is your involvement in agriculture? “I live on my family’s century farm in Polk County, Missouri. My parents have operated a fencing business for the last 8 years. Through that I have learned how to build multiple types of fences for a variety of livestock, as well as run machinery.
“My family and I also raise feeder pigs and I am responsible for the daily feeding and watering and routine medical care. We raise our pigs for our family and other local families to eat.”
“We currently have purebred and crossbred Duroc, Spotted Polland China, Hampshire and Hereford pigs. Although we have other animals on our farm, my passion is the pigs.”
What is your favorite part of being involved in agriculture/living on a farm? “I love having so many animals. They all have many different needs, and each day is different. I enjoy working with our veterinarian to get hands-on experience with all routine and emergency medical care for our pigs.”
“Anything involving animals is my favorite. Whether I am feeding, grooming or helping with routine medical care. As long as I am with the animals, I am happy!”
What are your future plans?
“My current focus is to breed purebred Spotted Poland China pigs. I currently own a purebred Spotted Poland China boar and have a healthy litter of 11 Spot/Duroc cross piglets. Although I am not sure what my plans are for the future, for now I plan to expand my pig operation, take as many Veterinary Science classes as I can and continue to grow my dog grooming business.”
Awards: I am currently the Secretary for the Eudora 4-H Club and the Treasurer for the Polk County 4-H Council. I have won a variety of 4-H awards in the arts and crafts, archery, dog, sheep and photography projects.”
