Adapting new feeding strategies on poultry farms
On farms across the Ozarks, broiler technicians like Austin Bell are helping poultry producers adapt to new technologies and feeding strategies to keep birds healthy and costs under control.
Bell, a broiler technician for George’s Inc. in Springdale, Arkansas, said improving feeding efficiency has become one of the most important goals for growers as feed costs continue to climb. Feed accounts for nearly 70% of total production expenses in the region, he said.
“Feeding is the biggest factor that affects performance and profitability,” Bell said. “Even small improvements can make a big difference.”
Bell works directly with contract growers to monitor feed systems, oversee equipment maintenance and track bird growth. He said problems such as uneven feed distribution or clogged lines are common issues that slow bird growth and waste feed.
“Regular maintenance and careful observation are key to keeping feed systems efficient,” Bell said.
Across Northwest Arkansas, many farms are adopting automated feed sensors, digital monitoring systems and climate-controlled ventilation to improve feed conversion rates. Bell said the new tools can save time and reduce waste, but they don’t replace experience.
Bell said many farms are improving feed conversion by adjusting feeding times to match the birds’ natural activity cycles. Automatic lights are timed to simulate sunrise and sunset, encouraging birds to eat steadily throughout the day.
Bell also mentioned some farms have started using precision feeding systems that automatically adjust feed delivery based on bird weight and temperature data. These systems help ensure birds receive constant nutrition throughout the growth cycle. Some companies are even piloting artificial intelligence software to predict feed cycles and demands.
“You still need eyes in the barn. A good technician can spot things a computer can’t, like feed dust buildup or bird stress,” he said.
Bell added that ongoing training is helping both new and experienced workers use this technology more effectively. Poultry companies and local organizations such as Arkansas 4-H (and its Youth Poultry Program), University of Arkansas Poultry Science Department, and Arkansas FFA Association are teaching students and producers how to interpret feed data, track performance and perform preventative maintenance.
“It’s no longer just scooping grain anymore,” Bell said. “You’ve got computers, airflow systems and feed controls. It’s a lot more technical now.”
He said improved feeding practices don’t just lower costs, they help stabilize flock health and farm efficiency long term.
“You don’t have to spend a lot to feed better, you just have to pay attention,” he said. “When we do our job right, the whole farm benefits.”
As farms in the Ozarks continue modernizing, Bell said success will depend on finding a balance between technology and the hands-on experience that keeps poultry operations running every day.
