James DeFreece, 16, of Marshfield, has been immersed in the dairy cattle industry since he was in diapers.

“I began following my PaPa around at the age of two,” he said, “and now it is in my blood.”

That blood has plenty of dairy farming genes in it, that’s for sure. DeFreece’s grandfather, Doug Thomas, is an experienced cattleman; raised on a fifth-generation dairy farm, he now raises show cattle and is the manager of dairy sales at Springfield Livestock Marketing Center.

It’s no surprise, then, that DeFreece is heavily involved in this world. He assists his grandfather with raising Brown Swiss and Jersey cattle, which he then shows. He’s received numerous awards, including Honorable Mention in the National Bell Ringer.

In addition, DeFreece assists his parents, Clint and Annie Spriggs, with their own farm duties.

“It is fun, a lot of hard work, and it takes time and patience – which I have none of,” he joked, “but I have learned so many things from my grandpa and others on the show circuit.”

DeFreece is a dedicated member of FFA, as well as participating in the Missouri Brown Swiss and Jersey Associations.

“I take pride in our dairy cattle,” he said. “My goal is that someday, one of my Brown Swiss will win at the World Dairy Expo in Wisconsin.”

DeFreece said his love for showing dairy cattle has rubbed off on his three siblings, Cason, Charlee, and Josie, all of whom assist with raising and showing the cattle on

their grandparents’ farm.

The family travels to dairy shows several times a year, including the Ozark Empire Fair in Springfield, Mo.; the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, Mo.; the HOA Brown Swiss Show in Stillwater, Okla.; and the Lone Star Jr. Extravaganza Dairy Show in Wichita Falls, Texas.

This constant travel has allowed DeFreece to learn and connect with others in the industry.

“Everywhere you go, you meet new and interesting people that may help you along your journey,” he said. “One of my best buddies and partners lives in Waco, Texas. You never know where life will lead you.”

“I take pride in our dairy cattle,” he said.

DeFreece added that he is particularly thankful to Nate Goldenberg, Troy Hemmingsen, and, of course, his grandfather, Doug Thomas, for showing him the ropes.
