What is your involvement in agriculture? I can’t remember a time when I was not involved in agriculture. From the time I was big enough to gather eggs or bottle feed a calf, I have been helping on our small farm. While our farm isn’t large scale, it is busy. We farm 100 acres where we grow soybeans, barley, oats, corn and Sudan grass for hay and silage. We use those crops to feed our weaned calves through their show careers to mature finished steers or replacement heifers. I keep a portion of the beef for our family’s need and sell the rest to customers that I have formed relationships with over the years. I’m very involved in the breeding process for my 5 head of cows. I choose the sire and help with the AI protocol and procedure. I also have 11 breeding doe rabbits and three herd bucks. I raise rabbits to show, sell and consume. Other projects we have on the farm are laying hens and an apiary. Beef, rabbit, fresh eggs and honey are staples in our house. I’ve been a member of 4-H for the past 11 years and a member of the Oologah FFA for the past 3 years. I have participated in ag related speech contests, agriscience and a livestock ambassador program. I’ve attended Lead 360 camp, AgHERculture conference, Stillwater Leadership camp and the FFA alumni camp. All of these camps cultivate leadership and agriculture.
What is your favorite part of being involved in agriculture? My favorite part of living on a farm is getting to be a part of and witnessing the life cycle. I truly enjoy raising calves, chicks and rabbits and watching them grow into their full potential. It is rewarding to make choices during all the stages of the project from genetics, nutrition and daily care routines and seeing success through the stages.
What are your future plans? I intend to pursue a career in midwifery, but plan to continue the way of life I have grown up with. It is my desire that my own children will get to experience farm life and learn the invaluable lessons it has to offer.
