Family: Wife, Christina and daughter, Brinkley, 6
In Town: Dax Moreton has been with Arvest Bank in Prairie Grove, Ark., for the past 12 years. He is an agriculture and commercial lender and the vice president of lending.
In the Country: Dax and his wife, Christina, run a commercial beef cow/calf operation near Summers, Ark. They run 100 head on 150 acres of owned and leased ground. “I have been in farming all my life but in 2001 my wife and I bought 29 bred heifers to start a herd of our own,” said Dax.
Management Practices: Dax pays close attention to herd health, retains heifers from his herd, keeps good records and utilizes spring and fall calving seasons. “I have two calving seasons. This limits my exposure to the market and allows me to sell in both markets. The thought process behind this is to have two paychecks per year and the other is market swings. The banking business has taught me to limit or manage my risks, this is the best solution for my operation,” said Dax.
Balancing the Bank and the Farm: “The bank comes before the farm. Some of the things on the farm get put off until time will allow. The farm gives me the opportunity to unwind after a long day behind the desk. The farm also gives us things to do as a family, from building fence to driving to pick up feed,” shared Dax.
Incorporating Ag at the Bank: “My ag background allows me to have a general understanding of the needs of our ag customers. This allows the customer to go straight to his/her financial need, not a lot of time is wasted explaining the operation. I think it makes the customers feel more comfortable once they know I have an understanding of their financial needs,” explained Dax.
