I’m sure majority of the Ozarks population would agree that good ol’ home cookin’ is one of the things that makes home feel like home. I’m sure each of you have your favorite recipes that bring back wonderful memories of growing up in the country.
There are many homemade meals that make my tummy growl and yearn to be in momma’s kitchen. One of my all time favorite meals though was actually prepared by dad – fresh squirrel with fried potatoes and thick squirrel gravy. Doesn’t get much better than that!
Well except maybe Grandma’s apple pie. Her apple pie is a hot commodity with our family. Yes, we have been known to fight over a piece or two. Since grandma only makes her famous apple pie a couple of times a year you have to jump on the opportunity to get a little slice of cinnamon apple heaven.
This was true a few months back. My little sister and her fiancé are going to Honduras this December on a medical missions trip. So in efforts to raise money for their trip, we put together a soup and dessert fundraiser followed by a gospel concert at church. The plan was for the family to make the soups and desserts but once people in the church found out they offered to help by donating soup and desserts also. So much to our surprise we had lots and lots of extra desserts, including a few pieces of grandma’s apple pie. We had so many desserts that we ran out of counter space leaving us with no choice but to put them anywhere we could find a spot in the kitchen.
As the fundraiser concluded and we begun cleaning up people started to gather up the leftovers. So of course, I grabbed all the pieces of grandma’s pie that I could, including a piece that had been stashed on top of the fridge.
The next day, I got a message from my very disappointed aunt. It turns out that the piece of pie stashed away on the fridge was stashed there for her. She intended on taking it home to eat the next morning for breakfast and thought it would be safe stored on the fridge. She should have known grandma’s apple pie isn’t safe left unattended.
Regardless how good that piece of pie was, I felt very guilty for depriving her of the best breakfast possible. Even though I had no idea it was spoken for – honestly!
So the first thing I did Thanksgiving afternoon was cut into grandma’s pie to reserve a piece just for my aunt. As soon as I gave it to her, without hesitation she locked it in her car.
I hope I redeemed myself.
