Hometown:  Summers, Ark.

Why did you become interested in agriculture?
“It was a natural thing for me to do. My parents were in FFA and many of my friends were in 4-H. I really only got started as a freshman and it was all new to me, but I love it.”

What is your favorite possession?
“I really love my FFA jacket because we get pins for all of our accomplishments and they mean a lot. We can only wear three at official FFA events but can wear them all at things like banquets here.”

What is most memorable about your competitions?
“I got third in the state for my prepared speech on the current economic crisis in the dairy industry. The next year my teacher and I decided I would do a controversial topic even though we knew I probably wouldn’t make it out of the sub region. The topic was the integral role immigrant workers play in American agriculture. We thought more people needed to hear about that so I went ahead and did it anyway.”

What are your future plans?
“I have already been accepted at the University of Arkansas. I will major in poultry science. I may continue my education to a Ph.D. level at either the University of Arkansas or the University of Georgia. My career goal is to develop feeds and formulae in poultry nutrition. I don’t want to lose my family so I plan on settling in this area. Besides, there is more opportunity because the poultry industry is more concentrated here than anywhere else.”
