Sharron Evans
In Town: “I retired from St. Johns after 31 years. Now I work for Dallas County Schools in Buffalo, Mo., part time that way I can still work on the farm. I just can’t actually retire. I’ll work until the day I die. I like to work and if it is at my own pace that’s even better.”
In the Country: Sharron runs 39 head on 70 acres in Tunas, Mo. “I knew I couldn’t keep up with all of the farm after my husband, Paul, died so I cut it down to my size. I have 30 acres on the home place and 40 acres and a rental house across the road. I use a rotational grazing system on four paddocks. My Blue Heeler, Sara, guards the gates and helps move the cows.”
Changing the herd: “My husband and I always had Herfords, but after he died and I started going to the sales and I noticed black cows were bringing more. I bought a registered Black Angus bull from my friend Ruby Bradford.”
Plans for the Winter: “I’ll bring the herd back across the road (to the house) this winter. I just put in a new watering system. That way I won’t have to break ice.”
Biggest Challenge: “Not being able to do the ‘man stuff’ by myself, like hooking up the brush hog to the tractor. My son, renters and neighbors help me out. I’m blessed in the fact that they will help me.”
