R Triple J Western Wear
Owner: Judy Boyd
Location: Inside Springfield Livestock Marketing Center, Springfield, Mo.
History: Judy opened R Triple J six years ago, when the stockyards opened. Judy’s two sons, Justin and Josh Boyd, team rope, and the family is heavily involved in the rodeo circuit. A store offering western apparel and some rodeo supplies, seemed like a natural fit.
Products and Services: R Triple J offers many lines of western clothes, Montana Silversmiths jewelry, Wrangler jeans, Justin boots, belts, toys and gift items for the home. They are in the process of phasing out their rodeo supply lines, but are adding more in the John Deere line.
How does the location in the stockyards help business?
“We have daily customers because of the cattle sales. And there are registered sales Saturdays all spring long, and that really helps, too.”
How do you stay ahead of the competition?
“Right now it’s really tough. After the ice storm, now with the price of gas, people buy fuel before they buy clothes. Here, with the cattle sales bringing people in, it helps. But if I was out on a regular street in Springfield I don’t think my business would be as good. This location is excellent.”
What's in future for the store?
"We have new product lines every three months. Montana Silversmiths now has a home decor line with a lot of outdoor stuff and bedding. We try to stay up with changes.”
What are your marketing techniques?
The company does advertise, but they try to sponsor worthwhile causes, Judy said. “We’re big on helping kids. We want to keep them involved and out of trouble. On July 12, R Triple J is sponsoring a Rope and Ride for Kids with Disabilities, to benefit Therapeutic Riding of the Ozarks. “We’re expecting 465 teams and we’re getting a lot of donations already. We want everyone to come out.” The event will be held at Roan Rose Ranch Arena north of Willard, Mo. (See our calendar on page 32 for more information.)
Is there a company motto you run the store by?
“We may not be the largest, but we are the friendliest and we thank you for your business.”
