OSU student wins Power and Energy Scholars Award

Electrical engineering senior, Anthony Gaskill from Bartlesville, Okla., has been awarded the John W. Estey Outstanding Power and Energy (PES) Scholar Award. The scholarship is from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) PES Society Scholarship Plus Initiative.

“I am incredibly honored to have received this award.  It would not have been possible without my internship experience with American Electric Power and the great people I worked with both in Tulsa and Columbus,” said Gaskill.

Gaskill was selected as the outstanding power and energy scholar of the southwest region. Seven regional John W. Estey scholarships are awarded annually. The scholars are selected on the basis of academic preparation, extra-curricular activities and leadership; interest in engineering, particularly with power and energy; the technical quality of the application and an overall assessment of the student’s potential for a successful career.

As the John E. Estey Outstanding PES Scholar Award recipient, Gaskill received $7,000 for school expenses and 12 months of complimentary membership in IEEE and IEEE PES Society. He also will receive up to $1,000 in a travel honorarium to attend the IEEE PES Annual Meeting in National Harbor, Md.

“The IEEE PES Scholarship is a program designed to encourage undergraduate engineering students to get involved in the energy and power area,” said Rama Ramakumar, regents professor and director of OSU’s engineering energy laboratory. “This industry will be facing a serious human power shortage very soon. Gaskill’s recognition speaks well of OSU’s talented students and long-standing energy and power focus.”

As a student in electrical engineering with an emphasis in power and energy, Gaskill is expected to graduate in December 2014.  He worked the last two summers as a co-op intern with American Electric Power, in Tulsa, Okla. in 2012 and Columbus, Ohio in 2013.

He is the secretary of the IEEE OSU branch, a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, a Phillips 66 Shield Scholar, an OSU College of Engineering Scholar, member of the Student Council for College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, member of the OSU Honors College and the OSU Symphony.
