Students at Oklahoma State University have a place to turn to receive free legal consultation on campus.
These services, provided through Student Government Association funding, give students advice for legal situations and can provide answers for general questions.
“SGA realizes students sometimes need helpful legal counsel regarding issues they face while at college,” says Kent Sampson, director of Campus Life. “This service has been provided free to students for more than 10 years. It’s another way our student leaders desire to assist fellow students.”
The most common issues addressed through the legal advisor service cover landlord/tenant disputes, interpersonal relationships, consumer and civil matters, and victim’s rights among others. Litigation or representation is not included, though students may be referred to legal counsel.
“Our current attorney is not only the most competent, but he is very approachable, so no one should hesitate to make the call to set up an appointment,” Sampson said.
Appointments consist of a 15-minute consultation with a licensed attorney and are available on a first-come-first-served basis on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
