Turkey Creek Feed

Owners:  Steve and Jeremy (pictured) Sloan
Location:  Joplin, Mo.

History:  Turkey Creek Feed has been open for business just east of Joplin, Mo., for over 20 years and in the Sloan’s hands for the past 10 years. “I started working here when I was 14 for Lars Osen. When Lars retired my dad and I bought the business,” explained Jeremy.

Products:  Turkey Creek sells feed, dog food, agricultural supplies, hay, straw and seasonal products, which includes a walnut buying station, Christmas trees and a greenhouse.

Unique Services:  “For the past five years we have hosted a poultry swap on the first Saturday of each month. Producers buy, sell and trade out of pickups. They mostly swap rabbits, pigs, goats and chickens but I’ve even seen snakes and camels at the swap. The swap started because we had several customers who would drive quite a ways for poultry swaps and didn’t want to drive anymore so we opened our gates. It’s different than a sale barn, it’s one-on-one and that’s what our customers want,” said Jeremy.

The future for Turkey Creek:  “The feed business is changing quite a bit because feed prices are so high – we are just trying to adjust with the industry and hopefully we’ll be around for the next 20 years,” concluded Jeremy.
