How are you involved in agriculture?
“I raise goats and I have a Shorthorn heifer. I have a Quarter horse mare, my Corgie dog, some chickens and some geese. But I only show Boer goats and my Shorthorn heifer.” Seth’s dad bought his Shorthorn heifer’s mother, and Seth received the heifer as a Christmas present. “At first I preferred the goats over the cattle because they were easy to handle. But after I worked with the heifer, she grew on me. I like her.” Seth’s heifer will be a year old in September.
Which is easier to show, cattle or goats?
“They’re about equal. The cattle are easier to talk about because everybody knows what a cow is, and they’re easier to handle most of the time.”
How long have you been showing?
“I’ve been showing goats for seven years and this is my second year showing cattle.”
What are the benefits of showing livestock?
“You get to meet new friends at all the shows. You get educated on it. You learn new things every time you go to a show, or when you have to doctor them.”
What advice would you give other young people interested in raising livestock?
“Learn as much as you can about them. Decide what you’re going to show, or raise, because not all species are the same.”
How are you participating in FFA?
“I’m the FFA chapter historian.” This is Seth’s new office, and the chapter hasn’t done much yet, but he has attended officers training. “I didn’t think it was going to be much fun, but I had a lot of fun. I’ve also been helping other people, and I’ve recruited some freshmen to join FFA.”
What are your future plans?
“To own a big farm and be a large animal vet.”
