COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Missouri will host a pre-semester open house and film 1-4:30 p.m. Friday, August 28.

The event, which is free and open to anyone interested in learning about Osher at Mizzou, kicks off with a 1 p.m. screening of “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” followed by a reception with light snacks. The open house will be held at the Moss Building, 1905 Hillcrest Drive, off Old 63 about 1/3 mile south of Stadium Blvd.

Instructors for the upcoming semester will be attending and are looking forward to meeting interested seniors, said Kristin Millikan, director of Osher at Mizzou.

A program of MU Extension, Osher at Mizzou provides noncredit educational opportunities for people age 50 or better on a wide range of subjects. This fall, Osher is offering 28 courses. Visitors to the open house can register for courses at the event.

“Some courses are academic, others practical and some just plain interesting,” Millikan said. “All provide a stimulating educational and social experience.”

Course topics include science and medicine, family relations, the legal system, yoga, religion, film, new technologies, foreign languages and more. A Friday brown bag seminar series, open to anyone taking a class, combines lunch and learning plus an afternoon movie with popcorn and discussion of the film.

“With no tests and no grades, the classes are an opportunity for seniors to enjoy learning for its own sake with others who share similar interests,” Millikan said.

“The organization, which is member-driven, fosters a community of lifelong learners who enjoy inclusive social events, such as this open house, and stimulating informal classes,” she said.
