Sustainability committee provides alternative for used items

As students prepare to move out for the summer, they’re invited to donate any items they no longer plan to use to Real Pokes Pass It On so they can be sold for others to use. All proceeds from the sales will benefit Wings of Hope in Stillwater.

Students can drop items off, May 5-8, from noon to 6 p.m. daily at the U-Haul trailers located at Kerr-Drummond and the Griffith Community Center in the North Monroe housing complex. Large items, like couches and kitchen tables, can be scheduled for pick up on Saturday, April 26. Students can schedule a pick up time by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 25.

Real Pokes Pass It On accepts donations of clothing, furniture, TVs,  home decor, unopened nonperishable food items, kitchenware and other household items. Used items will be stored during the summer and sold to students at affordable prices during the beginning of the fall semester. All proceeds go to Wings of Hope in Stillwater. All unsold items will be donated to Goodwill.

The annual effort is sponsored by the Student Government Sustainability Committee, which started the program in 2009 as a way reuse items on campus and raise funds for charity.

Jay Scudder, SGA sustainability committee chair, encourages students to donate to Real Pokes Pass It On because proceeds go to Wings of Hope, which offers safety as well as special services to individuals and families experiencing domestic violence, abuse or neglect.

“Many people have seen the amazing things that Wings of Hope does for the Stillwater community, and we intend to keep donating 100 percent of proceeds to their program,” Scudder said.

SGA allocates funds to clubs and organizations for events that can be enjoyed by the entire student body. It also designs programs to better the OSU campus, community, and most importantly, students’ way of life.
