Johnson Feed Store
Owner: Brett Johnson
Location: Sparta, Mo.
History: Johnson Feed Store began as a business venture in Bradleyville, Mo., after Brett Johnson overheard a group of farmers at a gas station talking about how much they would like a feed store that carried only feed. In March of 2007, Brett opened a store that sold just that: feed. The Bradleyville store remained open until March of 2011. Today, Johnson Feed Store in Sparta, Mo., in Christian County (opened in 2009), located just off of Highway 14, is a popular spot for farmers and pet owners. Folks are drawn to the ease, simplicity and great service found at Johnson Feed.
Products: Brett carries all livestock feed, pet food, minerals and lick tubs. Feed is sold in 50 pound sacks and the prices are listed on a whiteboard behind the front counter. The feed is loaded into customer’s vehicles via a loading dock on the east side of the store. The variety of feed Brett carries includes everything from hog finisher to dog food to chicken scratch with or without milo pellets.
The business: Johnson Feed Store is an owner operated business. “I’m here 90 percent of the time,” Brett said, smiling. Each customer is given individual attention and advice depending on his or her specific pet/livestock needs. Brett stressed the importance of building customer relationships, an attribute that has greatly contributed to his customer base. He believes in, “treating people right, the way you want to be treated.” Low prices and a simple, honest way of doing business keeps people coming back again and again. “There’s nothing over people’s heads,” said Brett.
Future Plans: Brett plans to continue growing his feed store business. In the future, he hopes to be able to mix his own bulk feed.
