American Salers Foundation Scholarships were awarded to the following worthy Junior Association members at the 37th Annual Salers Banquet on January 16, 2012.

Ashley Pike, Mitchell, Neb., was the first recipient of the John C. Shover Memorial Scholarship of $1,000, presented to her by Buck Hutchison. A senior at Scottsbluff Senior High School, Ashley has achieved an outstanding academic record while actively involved in FFA, 4-H for ten years, and the ASJA for six years, where she is serving this year as board President. Ashley’s goal is to earn a degree in Agribusiness and promote the Salers breed.

Casey Lee Huffmaster, Williford, Ark., was awarded a $1,000 ASA Foundation Scholarship which will help her at Arkansas State University in pursuit of a degree in Animal Science. Currently she is a senior at Highland High School and has been involved with livestock from a young age. Casey has been active in 4-H, FFA and the Arkansas Junior Cattlemen’s Association and is the American Salers Queen for 2011-2012.

Devon Grey Rodgers, Ronceverte, WV, received the second of two $1,000 ASA Foundation Scholarships awarded at the ASA annual banquet in Denver. A past Salers Queen, Devon first showed cattle at the West Virginia State Fair in 2008 and since then at the American Royal, N.A.I.L.E and two ASJA Junior Nationals. She has completed her first semester of college at New River Community and Technical College and plans to continue in the field of Nursing.

Jacob Irwin, Ola, Ark., received the $250 Frank Gamble scholarship. Jacob participated in his first Junior National in 2008 and has been elected to the Junior board since then. Now attending Arkansas Tech, Jacob has made the Dean’s Honor Roll and is pursuing an Agri-Business Pre-Vet degree with the goal of going on to Veterinary School.

The American Salers Association (ASA), with headquarters in Parker, Colo., is the Salers breed’s leadership voice that records, protects and promotes Salers cattle. The ASA has represented Salers breeders across the nation since 1974.
