In response to the letter to the editor by Twila D. Leierer:
Let me say I have never written a “Letter to the Editor,” nor to a company complaining about a product, but I just could not let this one pass. I do not know Jerry Crownover, I just enjoy his column. Nothing personal here, but in his defense I would like to point out a few things.
Ms. Leierer made several statements as facts, which were obviously made from assumptions on her part. His article was meant to be light hearted, but as anyone who has raised cattle on a real everyday operation, with the intent of just trying to make a living, knows cattle can be difficult at times. They, like people, have different temperaments and dispositions.
First, he never said he shot the animal. Second, she doesn’t know anything about his cattle’s health program. Third, thank goodness for ATVs. I chased cattle for years on foot. Cattle don’t always cooperate. ATVs will usually get cattle penned quicker and with less stress on them and the farmer. Just a little common sense goes a long way, which it seems in her case is not so common.
Now concerning fences, they are at best only a deterrent. They can be in excellent condition one day and down the next. If an animal is so determined to go through a fence, he will.
I don’t know how long it takes to become a “certified animal welfare specialist” (whatever that is) but I have over 40 years experience raising cattle, so I understand exactly what Jerry Crownover was saying. Come on Ms. Leierer, lighten up. You obviously have some learning and experience yet to gain in the real world of the cattle business.
