Kelsey & Foy Whitelaw
In Town: Kelsey & Foy Whitelaw both work at off-the-farm jobs. She is employed as a pharmacist at Marshall Medic Pharmacy in Marshall, Ark.
Foy works at Ozark Hardwood Flooring, installing and refinishing hardwood floors.
In the Country: Foy and Kelsey have 50 head of Charolais cows on their Marhsall, Ark., farm. They own 95 acres where their home is built, and lease another 900 acres with 650 of that cleared for pasture and hay baling. “I just like the Charolais. Calves are small but grow into big-framed, heavier cattle that perform well.” Then he added with a grin, “They are easier to find on a dark night.”
What would you say to other young people wanting to start farming?
“It’s a good way of life,” Kelsey said. “And we definitely want to raise our children to appreciate country life. There are many good lessons to learn from living on a farm.”
Farming is Foy’s way of life, his goal to make a living with his cow/calf operation. “But there are benefits far more important than what money can be made at farming,” he said. “This is a simple life, building good family memories.”
