I got asked to volunteer for quite possibly the best volunteer position there ever could be a few weeks back. I was asked to judge the Polk County Fair’s pie contest.
In the 4-H building where the contest was to be held, the pies sat on tables lining the length of the building. There was a youth division, fruit division and cream division. Even the youth pies were great. Gooseberry won in the fruit division, and apple won in the youth. The grand champion was a Lemon Meringue, and if you would have seen this pie you’d know why it won. Making meringue is an art, and this lady had a deep dish lemon cream pie with at least five inches of meringue on top. It was a beauty! Her recipe is below.
I was sworn to secrecy as to who my fellow judges were. I’m not sure if they were just worried I’d tell all of you who’d tasted at least 30 pies with me that day, for fear you’d poke fun at their waistlines, or if they were worried their favorite volunteer job would become a hot commodity and they might be replaced next year.
Thanks again to Kathy Drake, at the Bolivar Extension office, for thinking of me. Hope y’all are out and enjoying your own county fairs this year.
God Bless,
