Life Is Simple

Throughout the year there are a lot of days to which I look forward, even though one of my good friends recently reminded me that, at my age, I should look forward to any day I can get out of bed.

Tis the season for overeating. I would take a wild guess and say that many people reading this column over indulged Thanksgiving weekend and will probably do so again during Christmas or perhaps even during New Years. I know I did and will again. It’s hard not to take more than my fair share of food when there are so many delicious choices on the table during the holidays. From ham and turkey, to mashed potatoes and gravy and sweet potatoes, to pies and candies, I just can’t seem to get enough until I am miserably full.

People went to the polls and voted, some of us did anyway. I worked some elections way back when you had to count and certify the ballots and then someone had to take the ballots to Fayetteville, Ark., around midnight or later. Voting machines have sure done a great job of handling that chore. I appreciate the folks that take the time to handle that. It takes a much longer time in Arkansas because we vote for a week.

Aperson’s memory is a strange phenomenon. I, for example, can remember the six-digit student ID number that I was issued upon arrival to the university in 1970, but can’t remember the six-letter password that my bank gave me to access my account… just last week. I can also remember the telephone number from when we first obtained that new-fangled contraption back in 1966, but have no idea what the number is for my wife’s or either of my son’s phones. Thankfully, they are simply programmed into my phone as Boss, Employee #1 and Employee #2. I can, however, be grateful I’m not afflicted with the memory problems of one of my neighbors.

It’s deer season in the Ozarks. For many deer season is a cherished tradition and lifestyle. Deer harvested this fall is a staple on the dinner table for many families.

The cowboys came last Tuesday to help with my annual fall ritual of sifting through the cow herd. While every cattleman has their own criteria for deciding which cows to keep and which ones to opt out, I’ll grant you that my methodology is not nearly as scientific as most.

The sliding door in my office is the scene of falling leaves from the hardwood trees. Deer have come by gathering the dropping acorns from the ancient white oak beside the house. If we would have had a frost here before the time I wrote this column it might have been gone.
