Annual hot air balloon championship returns to the Ozarks

HARRISON, ARK. – Each September, the picturesque town of Harrison, Ark., hosts the Arkansas Hot Air Balloon Championship. This year’s event marks the 29th anniversary of hot air balloons making their way through the Ozark Mountains for the annual key-drop competition.

The festival’s roots trace back to 1995 when a group of passionate balloon enthusiasts envisioned an event that would showcase the beauty of hot air ballooning and bring the community together. Over the years, the championship has blossomed into a beloved tradition, attracting balloonists and spectators from across the country.

The Ozarks provide the perfect backdrop for hot air ballooning with its rolling hills, lush valleys, and crisp mountain air. Cool mornings with calm winds are ideal for a gentle and scenic flight. As the sun rises, casting its warm glow over the landscape, the balloons transform into vibrant splashes of color against the clear blue sky.

Balloon pilots and passengers lucky enough to soar above Harrison are treated to a panoramic view. The Buffalo National River, a haven for kayakers and outdoor enthusiasts, snakes its way through the hilly terrain. Majestic pine trees and ancient hardwoods paint the landscape with a palette of green and early fall color, while glimpses of shimmering lakes and hidden waterfalls add to the charm. The iconic Boone County Courthouse, a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture, stands proudly in the heart of the town, a testament to the region’s rich history.

But the magic of the Arkansas Hot Air Balloon Championship extends far beyond the breathtaking views. The festival offers a vibrant ground experience that’s enjoyable for all ages. Local crafters and vendors showcase their unique wares, from handcrafted jewelry and art pieces to delectable homemade jams and local honey. Food trucks line the festival grounds, tempting taste buds with a diverse selection of culinary delights, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every craving.

As the day progresses, the atmosphere comes alive with the sounds of lively music performed by local bands. The festival takes pride in showcasing the musical talent of the region, creating an energetic and welcoming ambiance.

The night culminates with a spectacular balloon glow. During this mesmerizing and magical event, about 20 hot air balloons glow in the evening twilight. Tethered rides are also offered during this time, allowing visitors to experience the magic of ballooning firsthand.

One of the most exciting events of the championship is the thrilling key-grab and bean bag toss competition. Pilots navigate their balloons toward a designated area where a large key is placed atop a pole. The first pilot to snag the key from their balloon’s basket is declared the winner of the $10000 prize. In 2023, Al Muir, from Houston, Texas, was the first pilot to grab the key in the competition’s history.

Pilots also toss a bean bag towards targets for prize money, an event that can be viewed from the First Baptist Church on Pine Street in the early mornings during competition weeks. This spectator-favorite event adds a touch of friendly competition and keeps the crowd on the edge of their seats.

Beyond the Competition

While the key-grab competition and balloon races are undoubtedly thrilling highlights, the Arkansas Hot Air Balloon Championship offers many activities for families and those seeking educational experiences.

A dedicated “Kid Zone” hosted by the local Boy Scout troop keeps younger visitors entertained with inflatables, face painting, and interactive games. Aspiring balloon pilots can learn about the science of hot air ballooning through educational exhibits and talks with experienced pilots. Witnessing the inflation process firsthand is an awe-inspiring experience, especially for children, fostering a sense of wonder and sparking an interest in aviation.

For history buffs, the festival provides an opportunity to explore the charming town of Harrison. The Boone County Heritage Museum offers a glimpse into the region’s rich past, while a stroll through the historic downtown district allows visitors to admire the beautiful architecture and appreciate the town’s unique character.

The Arkansas Hot Air Balloon Championship isn’t just about competition; it’s about fostering a sense of community and celebrating the spirit of adventure. Mark your calendars for September 13th, 14th, and 15th, 2024, and prepare to be enchanted by the magic of floating over the Ozarks.
