FULTON, Mo. – The 2016 East Central Missouri Cattlemen’s Tour, sponsored by University of Missouri Extension, features stops at MU research farms, cattle farms, meat packing plants and other points of interest in two states.
MU Extension livestock specialist Ted Cunningham said the March 17-19 tour includes pickup points at Rolla, Vienna and Columbia. Stops include MU Beef Research and Teaching Farm; Musgrave Angus, Griggsville, Ill.; University of Illinois Orr Beef Research Center; Tyson Fresh Meats beef packing facility, Joslin, Ill.; John Deere Harvester Works, East Moline, Ill.; Greg Drebes’ Prairie View Farms, Monroe City, Mo.; and Linnenbringer Farms, Hatton, Mo.
Musgrave Angus is a family-run diversified operation with cattle raised in a rough, primarily fescue environment. The farm is home to the largest registered Angus herd in Illinois.
Drebes’ Prairie View Farms features a modified open-front building for his purebred Simmental and Sim x Angus herd. The farm’s heifers typically are among Show-Me-Select’s highest average consignors.
Linnenbringer Farms offers hormone- and antibiotic-free beef and eggs directly from the farm, in buying clubs and at the Columbia Farmers Market. The third-generation diversified crop and livestock farm uses rotational grazing and integrated pest management principles.
Tyson Foods employs 2,400 workers at its Joslin, Ill., plant, which is one of the largest meatpacking facilities in the nation.
Combines and combine headers are manufactured at the John Deere Harvester Works plant in East Moline, Ill. Factory tour guides show each stage of the manufacturing process.
The tour cost includes transportation, lodging, fees and most meals. Cost is $675 per couple for a double-occupancy room and $475 for a single-occupancy room.
