COLUMBIA, Mo. – Health insurance agents and brokers who want up-to-date information about the Affordable Care Act can sign up for workshops in September and October.

University of Missouri Extension, in partnership with Missouri Foundation for Health and The Mission Center, will offer free trainings throughout the state on the ACA Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) and the individual marketplace.

Anyone who attends will get three continuing education units (CEUs) at no charge, said Brenda Procter, associate professor of personal finance for University of Missouri Extension.

There’s an advantage for agents and brokers taking this extra training and becoming certified to operate in the marketplace.

“What that could mean for them is if a consumer or business goes into healthcare.gov and searches by ZIP code, the agent or broker’s business can pop up,” said Graham McCaulley, MU Extension assistant professor of personal finance.

The agenda will include “The Basics of the Affordable Care Act,” “How to Help Individual and Family Consumers Navigate the Marketplace,” “Employer Sponsored Health Insurance Under the ACA,” “Assessing and Using the Small Business Health Options Program” and “A Guide to Marketplace Certification and Training.”

Lunch will be provided at no cost to the participants. To find a workshop near you, go to extension.missouri.edu/insure and look at the calendar section on the right side of the page.
