COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension’s Family Impact Center in Columbia celebrates its first anniversary with an open house 4:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 13.
Free activities at the event include carnival games, a bounce house and face painting. Free hot dogs, chips and snow cones will be served.
Representatives of the groups housed in the Family Impact Center will be available to visit with those attending the event, said center director Ashley Guillemette. Programs in the Family Impact Center include the Integrative Behavioral Health Clinic, MedZou Community Health Clinic and Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA).
The center, at 105 E. Ash St., has served more than 1,000 people since its grand opening in May 2014. The two most popular services are MedZou and free tax help through VITA.
This spring, the center hosted Camp CA-POW (College Access—Planning Our Way), a free camp to help middle school youth plan for college, in collaboration with the MU College of Education and MU Extension 4-H. MU faculty and staff also offer the Building Strong Families program at the center.
The MU Office for Financial Success offers financial counseling at the Family Impact Center on topics such as budgeting, debt reduction, credit score enhancement and saving. The center also offers programs on practical life skills such as setting up computers and phones, connecting devices to the Internet, and how to take care of a lawn mower. English as a second language classes and high-school equivalency courses are held at the center through the Columbia Area Career Center’s Adult Learning Center.
