COLUMBIA, Mo.– “The world is not the same as it was 60 years ago,” says John Worden, director of the University of Missouri Extension Law Enforcement Training Institute. That’s why the 50-plus crowd will benefit from a five-week seminar series through MU Extension’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
The free classes run 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Sept. 13 and 20, Oct. 18 and 25, and Nov. 1. All sessions will be held at the Stephens Lake Activity Center, 2311 E. Walnut St. in Columbia.
Worden will give police insider tips for safety at home, in the workplace and in public.
Seniors are often victims of crime because they are trusting and have been taught to be friendly and civil. Sometimes that friendliness creates opportunities for criminals. Criminals usually are lazy, Worden says, and they seek easy targets.
“Trust your gut,” Worden says as he gives an overview on crime theory. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts, he warns.
Worden will talk about the latest scams and con games, including ones on the Internet, and help seniors learn how to handle aggressive co-workers and customers while working and volunteering.
He also will talk about public safety, including how to develop exit strategies at home and in public places such as work, shopping malls, parking garages and others.
