Hometown: Marshfield Missouri
Family: Husband, Tyler and daughter, Monroe, age 2
In Town: Madison is the fourth generation in her family to be working in real estate. Unlike those before her who were in sales, she works in operations for a Springfield real estate firm that employs 15 real estate agents.
“I am involved in all phases of the daily operation of the business,” she explained. “That includes a wide variety of different types of real estate, from commercial to residential, farm properties, and investments. While historically, my family has been involved in sales, I work on the administrative side of the business.”
Her husband, Tyler works for city utilities for the city of Springfield as their leak investigator for the water department.
In the Country: Madison and Tyler keep 60 cow-calf pairs of mixed commercial cattle on a total of 240 acres, both their own as well as leased acreage.
“We bought our first cows at the sale barn seven or eight years ago, just for fun and things just sort of spiraled from there,” she continued with a laugh. “We were able to lease 20 acres in the beginning and that really helped us get started. From there, we were able to lease more acreage on nearby farms. We wouldn’t have been able to do this without starting out by leasing pasture. We bought our first 80 acres last year.”
She added. “Tyler’s parents who also live in Marshfield, had registered Brangus but sold them all several years ago. I came from the horse world so I had a lot to learn. We have some Beefmaster cows we just love. They have such great personalities. Many of our others are just black stock cattle. We also have a few feeder steers we raise each year on a little grain for ourselves and a few family members but other than that we don’t grain any of our cows.
“We grow a little of our own hay but purchase most of it. We’ve had a lot of success following Greg Judy’s recommendations off of YouTube including his advice on rotational grazing.”
She concluded. “We have found that adding a mineral supplement called Preferred Livestock supplements has greatly increased our conception rates and cow condition. It has really helped us to increase our profitability with our cows.”
