HARRISON, ARK. – Each September, the picturesque town of Harrison, Ark., hosts the Arkansas Hot Air Balloon Championship. This year’s event marks the 29th anniversary of hot air balloons making their way through the Ozark Mountains for the annual key-drop competition.
The festival’s roots trace back to 1995 when a group of passionate balloon enthusiasts envisioned an event that would showcase the beauty of hot air ballooning and bring the community together. Over the years, the championship has blossomed into a beloved tradition, attracting balloonists and spectators from across the country.

The first pilot to snag the key from their balloon’s basket is declared the winner of the $10000 prize. In 2023, Al Muir, from Houston, Texas, was the first pilot to grab the key in the competition’s history.
Pilots also toss a bean bag towards targets for prize money, an event that can be viewed from the First Baptist Church on Pine Street in the early mornings during competition weeks. This spectator-favorite event adds a touch of friendly competition and keeps the crowd on the edge of their seats.
