COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute opens the fall semester Sept. 8 with a diverse curriculum and a new director.

University of Missouri Extension’s Osher program has been revamped to include four multispeaker series and new membership options under the direction of Kristin Millikan.

“The new series includes Law and Order, All of Us Together, Health and Wellness, and Amazing Discoveries courses. The diverse set of classes offer expert perspectives on current legal, cultural and scientific issues unfolding in today’s world,” Millikan said.

Courses cover a broad array of topics and follow different formats this year, Millikan said. New membership benefits include discounted tickets to select films at Ragtag Cinema and free Columbia Parks & Recreation 50+ Program classes at the Hillcrest Community Center.

The Basic semester membership of $40 includes the “Taste of Osher” Brown Bag Seminar Series, Saturday Book Talks, participation in all Osher clubs (including the Spanish Club and Travel Club), and Parks & Recreation membership for members 50 and older. Upgraded memberships are available for nominal fees and include perks such as a library card to the University of Missouri Library.

Osher offers adult learners classes on topics as diverse as ticks, potatoes and nuclear weapons. The fall semester features thought-provoking courses on TED Talks and law and order, including a session on “Lessons from Ferguson.”

Prior to joining Osher in June, Millikan worked in the Chicago area with the Illinois Humanities Council and Northwestern University as program and communications coordinator. She holds a master of arts in liberal studies from Northwestern University.
