Oklahoma State University seeks nominations for service scholarship
The 2014 Newman Civic Fellow scholarship is honoring inspiring student leaders who have made a substantial contribution to their community through service in 2013.
Newman Civic Fellows are recommended by college and university presidents. Only one student per university or institution may be nominated at the national level. OSU faculty members are encouraged to recommend outstanding students for nomination. Each college should submit the name of one student and his or her photo, resume and personal statement to Joyce Montgomery, OSU Service-Learning Volunteer Center coordinator, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Newman Civic Fellow scholarship is sponsored by Campus Compact. Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents, is committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education. Oklahoma Campus Compact will provide a scholarship award of up to $500 and invite the fellows to be recognized by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education at one of its regular meetings. The fellows will also be featured on both the national Campus Compact and Oklahoma Campus Compact websites.
Montgomery said OSU will look closely at the impact students have made when choosing a nomination candidate.
“This is a good way for colleges to reward those students who are working hard to make that connection between campus and community,” Montgomery said. “This idea is included in the Oklahoma State University mission statement and we really want to be a part of that.”
The Newman Civic Fellows awards were created in memory of Frank Newman, who dedicated his life to creating systematic change through education reform. Newman was a passionate advocate for broadening opportunities for diverse and economically challenged students to have access to a college education.
