Oklahoma State University launches Safe Walk program

Oklahoma State University has launched a Safe Walk program that will provide enhanced safety on its Stillwater campus.  The program uses trained student Public Service Officers or PSOs to accompany anyone from one campus location to another between the hours of 7 p.m. and 3 a.m.  

“The personal safety of our students and employees is a top priority on our campus,” said OSU President Burns Hargis. “The purpose of this program is to fulfill that priority.” 

In addition to safe walk duties, the PSOs, who work in pairs, patrol the campus on foot to help with security in campus parking lots and facilities, and watch for any suspicious activity.

“This program is allowing the OSU Police Department to expand its services and improve the security of one of the safest campuses in the Big 12,” said OSU Chief Public Safety Officer Mike Robinson.

Currently there are 15 part-time student PSOs and one non-student reserve that have been trained and are on patrol and the OSUPD has plans to take more applicants. Students interested in becoming a PSO should go to www.hireosugrads.com.    

Those interested in receiving assistance through the Safe Walk program should call the OSUPD at 405-744-6523 and ask for a PSO to be dispatched to your location on campus.  Again, PSOs are available seven days a week from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m.
