The Honors College at Oklahoma State University recently welcomed this year’s honors students with an annual fall semester ice cream social.
“Our annual ice cream social allows us to recognize Honors College award recipients while providing an informal setting that gives honors students an opportunity to interact with some of their professors and top-level university administrators,” said Robert Spurrier, director of the Honors College. Students also have the opportunity to mingle with their peers at the social, which helps build relationships that will last throughout the their college careers and beyond, he added.
The event recognizes all honors students who have completed the requirements for an honors award in the previous summer or spring semester, which includes the completion of 21 honors credit hours in four curricular areas and two special honors seminar classes with a cumulative grand point average of 3.5.
Most of students completed their general honors award, but other awards handed out to students include specific college or departmental honors awards and Honors College degrees. The departmental or college awards require the completion of 12 upper-division honors credit hours and a senior honors thesis or creative component with a cumulative 3.5 grade point average. The degrees, the highest academic distinction available to undergraduates, requires a minimum of 39 honors credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 at graduation.
This fall the Honors College has a record number of “active participant” Honors College students with 1,299 students. The students are from 151 Oklahoma cities and towns, 33 other states, and 10 other nations.
