ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Nothing says “country” like a Mason canning jar. Add social media tool Pinterest and you’ve got a budding business.

Buchanan County 4-H member Marissa Herring will be selling her “country chic” creations from Mason jars at the seventh annual Show-Me 4-H Wares at the Missouri State Fair. She gets her ideas from Pinterest.

Herring, a senior at Benton High School, likes to “countrify” items to make them appealing. Her business, “Anything CAN Happen,” uses the jars to bring back simpler times. Using berries from her grandmother’s strawberry patch, she made jam for her 4-H canning project. The jars bear her signature red and white checked cloth topper.

The Mason jars also are transformed into hand soap dispensers, candy jars, candy dispensers, sewing kits with a pincushion top and more.

Herring, a second-year 4-H member, plans to also show her white silkie chickens at the state fair. “They’re so cute and fluffy,” she said. She has 30 chickens and sells eggs.

She gathers eggs in the afternoon, as she has to be at school by 4 a.m. daily to participate in Junior ROTC. She also volunteers at the local food bank and at a camp for children with disabilities. She will be on the school’s student council and plans to be in FFA this year.

She plans to attend the University of Central Missouri at Warrensburg and major in agribusiness.
