ALBANY, Mo. – On Aug. 28, the public is invited to Hundley-Whaley Research Center’s field day. The annual free event is a chance to find about what is going on at the local research center and for landowners to learn more about better management practices.
A highlight of this year’s field day is the opportunity for landowners to get a soil-health analysis performed on the spot. University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources specialists will be on hand to test for active carbon in soil samples and provide feedback to landowners to improve the quality of their land.
Tours will start at 9 a.m. with informational talks along the way. Topics will include cover crops for forage and soil health, nitrogen availability losses, new fescue and soybean varieties, and study results for controlling different weed species. New technology available to landowners will be showcased with a drone demonstration to perform aerial scouting analysis.
Tours will conclude at noon and a complimentary lunch will be served.
“Our field day is the best time of the year to see new technology and products out there,” says Hundley-Whaley superintendent Bruce Burdick.
Research at the Hundley-Whaley Research Center includes new varieties of crops, assessing the economic value of alternate methods of applying fertilizer, updates on which weeds are now becoming resistant to common herbicides and new approaches to control them, forestry, and many other areas of interest to Missouri landowners.
Located in the outskirts of Albany on second-bottom river soils, Hundley-Whaley Research Center provides an optimum location for agronomic studies, including testing and comparison of new varieties and new products. Research also addresses improved management practices for crops, timber and bottomland soils. Ongoing research projects focus on the best management practices and economics for corn and soybeans. The research center is involved in pesticide evaluations and comparisons, and sustainable agriculture concepts.
