COLUMBIA, Mo. – There’s something for everyone at this year’s Mizzou Turfgrass and Ornamental Field Day. Lawn care and landscape professionals, homeowners and Master Gardeners will gather July 30 at the University of Missouri South Farm.
“We’re going to look at different diseases on turf grasses. We’ll look at a new herbicide on the market that controls Bermuda grass and discuss major issues in zoysia grass,” said Brad Fresenburg, assistant extension professor of plant sciences.
Not to forget ornamentals, there will be a discussion of disease problems in impatiens and information on urban trees.
Hank Stelzer of the MU Department of Forestry will talk about the health of Missouri’s trees after last year’s drought. There also will be a discussion of thousand cankers disease.
In the afternoon, participants can choose one of three tours.
One group will visit the Columbia Country Club’s golf course, which has undergone some major renovations.
Another group will visit Mizzou athletic fields. “Simmons Field, the baseball field, has converted from Kentucky bluegrass to Bermuda grass and there’s been some improvement on some of the practice fields,” Fresenburg said.
A third group will tour the Mizzou Botanic Garden. “We’ll be loading people up on a bus for a visit to the gardens around the Mizzou campus,” said Lee Miller, assistant professor of plant sciences. “Pete Millier, garden director, will be talking about the history of the Mizzou campus as a whole and then also the gardens. The public can come and look at some of these varieties and maybe plant them throughout their landscape and enjoy them as much as we do.”
