BRANSON, Mo.– Veteran Hollywood cinematographer Denis Maloney will share more than 20 years experience behind the camera at the third annual FilmFest 4-H, Aug. 4-7 in Branson.
Maloney continues the festival’s trend of drawing experienced Hollywood craftsmen to work with young filmmakers, said Bradd Anderson, state youth specialist with University of Missouri Extension 4-H and a co-founder of the festival.
Maloney has worked on more than 30 feature films, including “The Contender” (2000), which garnered Oscar nominations for stars Jeff Bridges and Joan Allen, “Edmond” (2005), written by David Mamet and starring William H. Macy, and the recently completed thriller “Vipaka,” featuring Forest Whitaker, slated for release later this summer.
His television work includes Showtime’s acclaimed documentary “20th Century: The Pursuit of Happiness,” directed by Robert Zemeckis, plus TV movies for NBC, ABC, Fox and Disney. He is a member of the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers.
FilmFest workshops are designed to help young filmmakers immediately improve their skills. There are opportunities to visit one-on-one with the presenters plus the rare chance to compare filmmaking notes from other 4-H’ers around the country.
FilmFest 4-H began in 2011 under the guidance of Missouri 4-H. It was created to provide a forum for young filmmakers to show their work and learn from professionals in the film industry. Last year, 4-H filmmakers from 11 states came to Branson for the festival and learned about directing, editing, casting, music rights, wildlife videography and documentary production.
The festival features workshops and screenings of films submitted by youth. Categories for films this year are Narrative, Animation, Documentary, 4-H Promotional and Voices of 4-H History. Prizes are awarded to the top films in each category. Judges are all working members of the film industry. The deadline for submissions is July 1, 2013.
Branson, home of the national FilmFest 4-H, is known as the Live Entertainment Capital of the United States, with more than 100 theaters and 55,000 theater seats. It’s located on Table Rock Lake in the beautiful Ozark Mountains of southwestern Missouri, and is annually ranked as one of the top family vacation destinations in America. The festival package includes a night at one of the great live shows.
