A few weeks back I was asked to help judge the District FFA Speaking Contest. I was honored that the Darr School of Agriculture, in Springfield, Mo., asked me to help and I appreciate the opportunity to help out my alma mater whenever possible.
Seeing the University filled with blue jackets brought back a lot of memories for me. It doesn’t seem like that long ago I was in their shoes. With a million emotions running through my mind as I anxiously waited to present the speech I’d been working so hard on.
Twelve students bravely stepped into the room to present the speeches they had written. Topics ranged from the farm bill to renewable energy to feeding a growing population. It was encouraging to see so many young students passionately present topics about agriculture.
These students devote many hours to researching a topic, writing and memorizing their speech, and then they must be able to answer questions related to their topic. Their hard work reflected in their presentations.
The students made our jobs as judges very difficult but after some deliberation we choose the winners. These students would then go on to represent the district at the Missouri State FFA Convention. Our district truly has some talented students. One of the participants, Heather McCleary, of Lebanon FFA, became the state winner. Blake Adams, of Carthage FFA, also placed fourth.
I would like to say congratulations to all twelve students who competed at districts. Keep up the good work! These students are the future of agriculture and I love seeing their involvement.
In the coming month, as schools close for the summer, take the opportunity to teach the youth in your life about agriculture. Taking them outside to get their hands dirty and helping with the farm chores may ignite the spark for their interest in our nation’s greatest industry. They too are the future of agriculture.
And while you are outside enjoying the beautiful weather, perhaps grilling up some steaks or barbecuing some pork, take the opportunity to share your summer recipes with our readers. You can send those recipes to P.O. Box 1319, Lebanon, MO 65536; email to [email protected] or fax to 417-532-4721. Be sure to include your name and hometown.
Best wishes,
