Kamm Lecture in Higher Education at Oklahoma State University on March 27, 2013.
The Kamm Lecture begins at 10 a.m. in Willard Hall, room 010, and the public is welcome to attend. St. John’s address is entitled “Reconciling Efficiency with Excellence and Fairness: Rethinking the State Role in K-12 and Higher Education Policy, with Consideration of the Oklahoma Case” and will be followed by a panel discussion. Panelists include Dr. Ann Caine, Stillwater Public Schools Superintendent; Dr. Gregg Garn, Dean of the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education and Director of the K20 Center for Educational and Community Renewal at the University of Oklahoma; and Tony Hutchison, Vice Chancellor, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.
St. John uses his research to bridge the gap between K-12 and higher education. He serves as series co-editor for Readings on Equal Education, an annual volume of policy research focusing on initiatives seeking to reduce inequalities in, while improving quality of, educational opportunities in K-12 and higher education. He also co-edits Core Issues in Higher Education, topical texts for professors and graduate students with an interest in the field. He directs the initiative Promoting Equity in Urban and Higher Education, funded by the Ford Foundation, at the University of Michigan’s National Center for Institutional Diversity. St. John is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and recipient of awards from other associations for his scholarship.
Now in its 21st year, the Kamm Lecture is named for Robert B. Kamm, Oklahoma State University President from 1966-1977, who served the university for more than 45 years and emphasized academic excellence and the centrality of students, faculty and staff in the learning experience. Annually, this event serves as a policy-impacting lecture that brings higher education leaders, private and public sector leaders together to examine critical issues that will shape the future of Oklahoma and the particularly the state’s higher education.
