Missouri farmers asked to participate in hearing study

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Michigan is seeking input from Missouri agriculture workers for a study on hearing.

Michael A. Cohen, clinical research coordinator at the University of Michigan School of Nursing, invites farmers to participate in a voluntary study on noise exposure and use of hearing protection.

Karen Funkenbusch, University of Missouri Extension rural safety and health specialist, said eligible participants would be asked a series of questions via the Internet. The process should take about 10 minutes and participants will receive up to $40 in addition to earning money for their state’s farm bureau safety program. Some participants also will receive a free sampler of hearing protectors valued at $30. Participants must be 18 years of age or older.

Farm workers have one of the highest rates of hearing loss among all occupations, Funkenbusch said. Noise from tractors, combines, grinders, grain dryers and other machinery over prolonged periods can cause permanent damage if noise-control measures are not taken.
