STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma Horticulture Society will host its annual fall meeting Sept. 16 at The Botanic Garden at Oklahoma State University.
Kim Toscano, host of the popular OETA program Oklahoma Gardening, said the meeting will feature Mark Fishbein, associate professor of botany and herbarium director at OSU, as the keynote speaker.
“We’ve very excited to have Mark be part of the annual fall meeting. He will showcase many familiar milkweeds among some less recognizable relatives,” Toscano said.
Fishbein helped The Botanic Garden at OSU staff install a spectacular milkweed garden as one of the many new additions to the garden this season. He will highlight many of those plants in his presentation.
In an effort to support OHS’s many different programs, including scholarships and educational speaker series, the day also will feature a plant auction.
“The auction will include a wonderful assortment of plants from Oklahoma’s most passionate gardeners and growers,” she said. “There’s always something incredible up for bid.”
The schedule for the day begins at noon with The Botanic Garden at OSU grounds opening for visitors. The plant auction runs from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the OHS business meeting taking place at 1:30 p.m. Fishbein will give his presentation at 2 p.m. Toscano will provide garden tours beginning at 4 p.m.
In addition to the milkweed garden, The Botanic Garden at OSU has a number of other new gardens this season, including the sensational Earth, Wind, Water and Fire Garden, along with the educational Integrated Pest Management Demonstration Garden.
“We also have some beautiful sculptures crafted by Stillwater artist Morgan Robinson,” Toscano said. “These new sculptures bring a whole new element to the garden. Plan to come out early that day to ensure you have plenty of time to walk around and see everything we have to offer at the garden.”
