How did you get started roping?
Gus says he started swinging a rope before he turned two years old, and he won his first goat roping when he was two and a half years old, in Guthrie, Okla. He started breakaway roping at four, and by the time he was five he could team rope. Gus’ dad, Danny, is also a roping enthusiast who has encouraged Gus’ interest.
How did you get started trick roping?
“In 2008, I watched a trick roper at the Harrison PRCA rodeo on a Thursday night. I thought, ‘I want to do that.’ I spent all day Friday practicing. My parents took me to watch him again Friday and Saturday. By Saturday night I had it figured out.”
Where have you done trick roping performances?
“I’ve been invited to do trick roping demonstrations at a Harrison pre-school, Cowboy Church and at my school (Omaha Elementary).”
What is the hardest part of trick roping?
“The hardest part is when I do my trick roping everyone is watching just me. I’m kind of shy when it comes to everyone looking at me.”
Where do you rope?
“This summer, I’ve been competing in team roping and breakaway roping. I’ve been roping at Morris Rodeo Ranch Jr. Rodeos in Dry Fork. I’ve also gone to a few benefit and jack-pot ropings.”
What awards have you won?
“I’ve won five belt buckles and a breast collar.” Last winter Gus won a belt buckle for winning the heading division of the Christian Cowboys of the Ozarks roping series competing against both adults and youth.
What goals do you have?
“My goal is to go to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.”
