It was one of those evenings when you really want to just sit down in front of the computer or the TV and let the evening slip quickly away. Instead, I let Ryan coax me out of his house to go for a walk. On a place he rents, a wet-weather spring had sprung, and I was a little intrigued to see this phenomenon myself.
As dusk quickly approached dark, we trudged through the soggy fields to the new spring. It so happened the cattle were back on that section. As we approached, I admired this particular herd. A lot of long ears, very colorful, not your typical cattle for these parts. Ruby, one of our favorites, was back there. She’s a red cow with very intricate white markings on her face. Hand-fed as a calf, she’s still friendly, even with her first calf at her side.
Hiking deeper into the pasture, the earth seemed to swell around us on all sides. The sky was that darker blue, with reds and oranges and purples on the west horizon. The moon was gaining its first light. And then we were upon the spring. The low part of the field had some rocks there, as soil had surely washed away in other wet seasons prior. Green grass was bent in the flow of clear, cool water. The water rushed down a little further to a pond where a few red and brown cows drank slowly.
I looked at the water gushing from the land, from where it usually shouldn’t gush. Propelled by small, underwater geysers, the small pool gurgled and bubbled. I looked up and all the cows formed a circle around us, almost reverent to this force of nature. I looked back at Ryan, and said, in awe, “This is the center of the universe.”
I’ve been on a lot of farms, and crossed a lot of lands in my days, but there, nearly in our backyard, I found the center of the universe, full of beauty, serenity, balance and life.
Enjoy this beautiful, green, bountifully wet spring. God Bless,
