Name: Harlee Ray
Parents: Christa and J.R. Littlefield
Groups: Ozark FFA, Franklin County 4-H
How are you involved in agriculture?
“I show cattle and swine at the county and state fairs and the American Royal. Last year I had the Grand Champion heifer at the Franklin County Fair, won the Beef Showmanship and my heifer won her class at the Fort Smith Fair. I am the president of Franklin County 4-H, the FFA Treasurer at Ozark High School and on the Livestock Judging Team.”
What have you gained from your involvement in agriculture?
“I have gained lots of leadership skills and independence. I’m more outgoing now. The most important thing I have learned is about being responsible, because you have to take care of your animals like they are your own kids.”
Do you have any advice for other young people thinking about getting involved in an ag program?
“I would tell them to learn everything they can about what we get from agriculture. It is important to spread the word and educate people about agriculture and how important it is. So many people don’t realize (where) their food comes from.”
What are your plans for the future?
Harlee said that she will continue to raise cattle and show animals even after she is out of high school. “I plan to attend the University of Arkansas and major in animal science and then transfer to Oklahoma State University for veterinary medicine.”
Who has influenced you the most?
“My county agent, Cindy Hamm, and my mother grew up showing. They have taught me so much and really help me with everything.”
