How are you involved in agriculture?
When Laykyn Rainbolt goes into the ring to show her animals, there are three things she always keeps in mind. “I hold my head up, watch the judge’s reaction to my animals, and I have fun. My registered Angus heifer, Checkerhill Viola N10 won Overall Supreme Heifer in the junior show at the 2008 Northwest Arkansas District Fair in Harrison, Ark. I bought this heifer, just for showing. In my specific breed division, I bring the heifer in, then walk around for the judges to view her. This year, I placed 3rd in high-point with the Arkansas Junior Cattleman’s Association.”
What lessons do you learn from your work?
“I’ve made more friends since being involved with 4-H and showing my animals. Because I’ve become more responsible by taking care of my own animals, I am a better person. Out of 35 entries, another heifer named Fancy won Grand Angus. There were 13 breeds represented and it was very exciting when the judge came and shook my hand when he picked Fancy for supreme heifer.”
How long have you been showing cattle?
“This is my second year. I have other animals that I show, two Angus heifers, an Angus bull, and a Limousin heifer. I’ve attended 17 sanctioned events this year sponsored by the Arkansas Junior Cattleman’s Association, and also attended a number of county and district fairs where I’ve shown my animals.”
What are some of your goals for the future?
“My main goal, to win Junior Showmanship. The person who inspired me the most is Katie Crow. My 4-H leader is Gail Feese, and she’s a lot of help for guidance.”
What else can you tell readers about yourself?
“I’m chairman of the scrapbook committee for the Arkansas Jr. Angus Association. We are preparing a scrapbook for National Competition. For 2008-09 I am one of five District Princesses for the Arkansas Jr. Angus Association.”
